What I Ate and Drank {Memorial Day Weekend}

This past weekend was a blast! Dane and I headed up north to Healdsburg, which is an area just past Napa. We’ve had Healdsburg on our “must visit” list for a while now, so we were stoked to finally make it there! It’s a gorgeous spot with lots of cute boutiques, art galleries and speciality stores. The town square is beautiful and full of grassy spots and bright, big trees.

In “What I Ate Wednesday” fashion, I’m sharing some of the food and drink highlights from our long weekend! I love eating out, but I do try to balance my meals so that I’m not going overboard on indulgent treats. I pick and choose which foods I want to indulge in and which foods I don’t. When I’m at a restaurant, I try to pick something that covers all my main macronutrients: fat, carbs and protein, so the meals below reflect that balance!

Friday night was spent with a little happy hour (or two!) then calling it an early night. I made dinner at home and hopped in to bed early and ready for the long weekend. My morning on Saturday started off like every morning with my staple breakfast: three hard boiled eggs with two big tablespoons of peanut butter. I eat this for breakfast every morning as I’ve found protein and fats to be the best way to get my day going.

Dane and I then headed up to Healdsburg and once we arrived, we headed to a Willi’s Seafood for lunch! We both started out with buffalo fried oysters, followed by roasted artichoke.

For my main, I ordered an unpictured beet and walnut salad along with chicken skewers in mango chutney washed down with a glass of chenin blanc. A well balanced meal and a happy tummy!

We spent the day roaming around the town and visiting almost every single shop! We stopped for coffees and chocolate truffles at a cute chocolatier and tea place. I opted for the dark chocolate ganache truffle– I’m not a huge fan of milk chocolate, but anything dark chocolate and I’m in!

Before dinner, we stopped at Duke’s for a cocktail. I was blown away by the cocktail choices, but finally decided on the “Shiva”: Fords Gin, Salted Cherry Blossom, Jasmine Tea, Clarified Lemon, Caperitif

It was fantastic!

For dinner, we headed to Mateo’s where we each had a taco cone! These were so cute and yummy. I had the black bean one with queso fresco and Dane had the carnitas one.

We also split an asparagus salad, which was pretty lack-luster. It was basically two stalks of asparagus with lots of lettuce, so that was disappointing. The crostini brought our spirits back up, though!

For my main, I ordered the chicken breast as I was craving a big buttload of protein. It was cooked beautifully with crisp on the outside and moisture on the inside. It came with seasonal vegetables which included peas, carrots and swiss chard.

We finished the night with chocolate covered oreos and Arctic Zero‘s!

On Sunday, we spent the day in Walnut Creek before heading back to the city. For lunch we stopped at True Food Kitchen, which I had been wanting to visit for quite some time now! We started with the crudité platter and had salads for our mains. My salad included roasted broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, mint, pistachios, raisins, chickpeas and chicken. I washed it down with a glass of riesling!

We spent the day shopping around and stopped at Teléferic for a gin and tonic. I got the “Spanish Merchant”: Gin, cinnamon tonic, cardamom, orange and candied ginger. It was delicious!

Later that evening, we headed back to the city, popped open a bottle of wine and I cooked up a delicious dinner full of salad, scallops in a blueberry ginger sauce and roasted squash and brussel sprouts in smoked olive oil.

After dinner, we watched movies and ate dessert in bed. I usually finish my day with a fruit platter and some chocolate as it always satisfies my sweet craving at night!

Monday was a gloomy day in the city, but I got a quick workout in and Dane and I grabbed lunch at Perry’s where I got an arugula and spinach salad with grilled chicken, golden beets, marcona almonds and avocado! I also paired it with a glass of Chardonnay. After lunch, we went and saw Alien at the movie theatre, which totally sucked. Don’t recommend it. Our overall consensus on the movie was “WTF?”

After the movie, we grabbed a quick drink at Top of the Mark before having dinner at home. I made big salads with bell pepper and lime-chili almonds and ginger-soy marinated tuna steaks with roasted fennel and asparagus in ghee. It was all washed down with Chenin Blanc!

#Balance

Needless to say, it was a wonderful weekend full of food and drinks. It’s so important to find a balance with eating healthy as well as letting yourself indulge.

For so long, it’s been engrained in women’s minds somehow that less food is better, but you have to treat your body well and give it fuel, otherwise it doesn’t work with you and instead, it fights against you. If you give it enough fuel, it can trust you and it will actually respond the way you want it to, which means when you do indulge, it won’t “derail” you.

That’s why crazy low cal/fad diets never work long term. You do more damage to your metabolism and end up running in circles. Find your balance, treat your body with care, love and respect and it will do the same to you!

Now you tell me…

Best thing you ate this weekend?

Oysters: YAY or NAY?

Chocolate truffle or chocolate cookie?
